Deep sorrow for the death of Dr. Lani Hidalgo

As a research partner of JSPS Core Universities program, I met her, Dr. Aklani Rose Hidalgo, Director of Fish Process Technology Institute, University of Philippines School of Visayas, for the first time in the summer of 2005, at the Iloilo airport. Since then we have collaborated in seeking antibacterial peptides/proteins in tilapia and milkfish, until 2007. It was wonderful to see her with calm, bright, and sincere mind. She was a cute teacher with beautiful English pronunciation, helping much our communication. I have a lot of unforgettable memories with her, in Iloilo, Miag-ao, Kagoshima, and Fukuoka.
She passed away last week. I deeply pray her soul may rest in peace. Also I hope that her friends would recover from their sadness of missing her.

  1. Hello. My name is Mia, I'm the youngest sister of Dr. Hidalgo. Thank you for your kind words about her and for posting these photos. Lani's death was indeed a shock to all of us. She was very much loved by our family and her friends, we will really miss her. We are comforted to know that there were more people (like you) whose lives were touched by her presence. Thank you.

  2. Dear Mia, Thank you for your comment. Lani has treated me very kindly during my visit to UPV, and we enjoyed our shared time with much energy for work and joy. I remember her telling that her name (Aklani) came from the Aklan province of the Panay, which your father originated from.
Anyway, I'm still missing her, but really hope peace and happiness of her bereaved family.
    Thank you.
    Miki

  3. My name is Anna and I was Lani's daughter. I really miss my mother and every day my father, Felix and I wonder how we are going to survive without her. Everyday I dream of her and I think of how happy we were. I was at school at the time. When I had heard what had happened,I was devastated.I feel better knowing that there are still people who were nice to us even in this hardest of times Thank you for being a kind friend even after she has passed away. We will never forget you.

    1. Dear Anna, thank you so much for your commnet. And sorry for not responding you sooner. I have just found your comment in my blog page, when I was browsing my past posts. (I wish if this blog could alert me any new commnets...)
I deeply sympathize with you and Felix, and really hope you step forward to your new life without Lani. It must be hard, but I believe you can encourage yourself for your own bright feature.
Do you stay in Miyag-ao or moved somewhere else with Felix? Anyway I look forward to seeing you again, when I get chance to visit Philippin again. Missing you, Felix, and other UPV friends.
      Best regards,
      Miki
